WELLSTEAD Margaret

Margaret Wellstead & Frederick Beere

Margaret Laura Wellstead was born on the 30th of August 1870 in Bremer Bay.
She met Frederick William Beere who was 19 years older, being born in 1851.
They were married in 1893.Just nine years later Frederick died in Northam.

Margaret was the twelfth child and eighth daughter of John and Ann Wellstead (of Bremer Bay)

We don't know a great deal about Margaret other than she married Frederick Beere in 1893 aged twenty two years. She then went to live in Eucla where her first two children were born, Edward John in 1894 and Leah in 1895. When in Eucla they were in a partnership and ran a shop 'Bates and Beere'.

All together Margaret and Frederick had a family of nine children - 3 girls and 6 boys. One boy and one girl died as babies. Edward John's grave is in Eucla, about 300 yards west of the telegraph Station.

MARGARET WELLSTEAD & FREDERICK BEERE             #1

Frederick William Beere was licencee of the Clackline Hotel at the time of his death in 1906, the cause being 'quincy' (infected tonsils) and with no money coming in, and no support, Margaret found living very hard, trying to feed her seven children.

Mr Farrant senior found the Beere children searching through rubbish bins for food. It was then he arranged to have them sent to orphanages. Gerald, Arthur, George and Percival were placed in the Swan Boys Home. Violet went to the girls orphanage in St Georges Terrace, Perth. Both Roderick and Leah were placed in employment as they had reached fourteen years of age, too old for the orphanage. Roderick was sent to work on a farm at York and Leah was sent to live with her aunt, Mrs Susan Coppin.

Margaret died five days before her fortieth birthday from peritonitis. This was caused by a strangulated hernia of the bowel. She was buried in Karrakatta Cemetery. A very sad short life. As there was no headstone, that particular section of the cemetery has now been turned into a memorial garden.
